<p>It has been well proven that the eccentric (lowering) portion of an exercise when compared to the concentric (lifting) phase, gives greater strength values, and increases in strength over time results in greater muscle cross-sectional area. Therefore if your goal is to increase muscle it would be wise to go slower or alternatively use more weight on the eccentric part of the exercise than the concentric part. For example when performing the EZ-bar biceps curl, you should curl the bar up in 1 second and return the bar down in 3 seconds. Another example would be at a Preacher Curl machine, take the bar up with both hands and then return to the start position using one hand.</p>

<li>Because of the thermogenic effects of exercise, it is important to stay hydrated &#8211; this means drinking adequate amounts of water.  Don&#8217;t wait until you&#8217;re thirsty &#8211; this is not necessarily a good indicator of dehydration.</li>
<li>Always wear appropriate clothing, especially in the gym environment, in particular: Appropriate footwear for your activity i.e. wearing flip-flops would not be ideal for the treadmill or the weights room. Wear clothing which is comfortable and allows you to perform exercises with full range of motion.</li>
<li>In order to build muscle, the correct amount of  protein should be consumed.  This will  facilitate muscle growth and repair.</li>
<li>Adequate amounts of sleep and rest are required to enable the body to repair and recover from exercise stressors.  If you lift weights (anaerobic activity) you don&#8217;t want to be exercising the same muscle group on consecutive days.</li>
<li>Try to keep a Fitness Log.  You&#8217;ll be much more motivated when you have a  written record of your progress.</li>
